French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu Resigns Following Less Than a 30-Day Period in the Role

The French Premier Lecornu has resigned, under 24 hours after his cabinet was announced.

The presidential office confirmed the news after Lecornu met President Emmanuel Macron for an hour on the start of the week.

This surprising decision comes only under four weeks after Lecornu was given the PM role following the dissolution of the previous government of his predecessor.

Political factions in the French parliament had strongly opposed the makeup of his ministerial team, which was mostly similar to Bayrou's, and promised to block its approval.

Calls for Snap Polls and Political Instability

Multiple political groups are now calling for new parliamentary polls, with certain voices urging the President to resign too - despite the fact that he has always said he will not leave before his term ends in the year 2027.

"The President needs to pick: calling new elections or stepping down," said Sébastien Chenu, one of leading figures of the RN party.

The outgoing PM - the previous military head and a Macron loyalist - was France's fifth prime minister in under two years.

Background of Political Crisis

French politics has been highly unstable since last summer, when snap parliamentary elections resulted in a no clear majority.

This has made it difficult for every premier to garner the necessary support to approve legislation.

The previous administration was voted down in autumn after the assembly declined to support his austerity budget, which aimed to cut state costs by $51 billion.

Financial Pressures and Market Response

The nation's budget gap reached 5.8 percent of economic output in 2024 and its national debt is 114 percent of GDP.

That is the number three debt level in the European monetary union after Greece and Italy, and amounting to almost €50,000 per French citizen.

Share prices dropped in the French stock market after the news of Lecornu's resignation was released on Monday morning.
